Day Jobs

Postby housemaster » August 8th, 2017, 7:26 pm

I have been curious about this since i joined the forum.
What do people here do for a living?

Do the skills needed with this hobby transfer on to your work or is it just a way to relax at home?

I work for a company that repairs surgical insturments.
I personally repair small diameter fiber optic endoscopes.
They are pretty much a straw full of .5mm fiber optic bundles.
Building models is fairly similar do what I do at work.

What about you guys?

I've been running .JPG Productions, and doing molding/casting garage kits for you fine folks for almost 10 years now. And I appreciate every minute of it.

I'm a programmer/dba/jack of all trades for a help-desk type company.

1 of 4 others

Nowadays, we mostly work in C#, HTML and lots of SQL

I mostly write translator programs and scripts for various third party cloud apps to pass data between each other and our internally developed apps and dbs

I've been here a little over 20 years now

Before that I worked as a bench Jeweler since that was actually a field directly related to my BFA in metalsmithing. However it did not pay as well as computers back in the late 90s and I had my hours cut back right after I bought a house.

So I took a quick intro class at our community college and got here. At the time they were willing to train you in supporting office products as long as you had a basic pc knowledge. I worked my way up over the nex few years to the position I am at now since I was a "quick learner" in writing macros and VB stuff.
If you have a tool and aren't aware of what it can do, its dangerous. A jedi can do amazing things with a lightsaber. A roomful of chimps with lightsabers... would get messy.

Linux sysadmin (my title is senior support engineer) at a hosting provider. Building models really is a kind of escape for me, something to challenge me enough to get my mind of off work.

I'm a fabricator at a sign factory. You know A&W? We do those, and more.

I'm also a singer/songwriter/musician and am currently working on making a living at that.

Well, I guess I'll be the odd one out.

I'm a school counselor at a middle school of about 620 kids. I think if anything, modeling helps me be patient and relax at the end o the day (assuming what I'm building is relaxing).
