Revell AT-ACT Build

Postby DeadHead » June 24th, 2018, 7:12 am

Not sure if I should post this here since I'm finished, but I documented most of my build. If it needs to be moved, please do so.

Got this kit for my birthday. It is not the greatest kit. It does have a board with light and sound built into the head. I could have knocked it together, done some weathering, and called it a day. But my pea-brain said I could make it better, so it went under the knife. I used mainly AT-AT references, but took a few liberties with it due to limited source material for the AT-ACT.

I lost some of the pics, but this will pretty much show what I went through.

What I had to start with. You can see that I started to saw on the undercarriage before I changed my mind to scratchbuild the whole thing.

Lower legs getting their makovers. Added styrene strips and plugged some holes. The strut mounts didn't match my reference material, so they were re-done.

Upper legs getting some upgrades. Filed them to be thinner and added the styrene. The ribs on the front and rear of the leg really added some nice detail.

Cut the feet so I could show them being compressed with load on them. Added more styrene.

Undercarriage being built. This is where I lost a lot of my pics. Built with PVC pipe, some plastic tool holders from work, and styrene. I vacuum formed the Y joint covers after carving the molds from balsa.

Modifications made to the head. I removed the side "cheek" shields and scratbuilt new ones. Added a few panels and extended the "brow" over the cockpit for a more menacing look. I filled in the speaker holes and added more styrene.

After all that, I decided that the kit neck wasn't good enough, so I cut it off and built a new one. I started out by wrapping 28 gauge wire around a scrap piece of tube. I used cyanoacrylate for this and left plenty of skin on things while doing it. I lost the pics of this part of the the build, too. I added some styrene bands, etc. that can be seen on the finished product.

Excellent work!

It looks like a proper model now instead of a toy
If you have a tool and aren't aware of what it can do, its dangerous. A jedi can do amazing things with a lightsaber. A roomful of chimps with lightsabers... would get messy.

I think that´s exactly what the expression "to polish a turd" means. :D The kit looks aweful, but you turned it into a proper model. Beautiful work! :)
