Very cool

I think the faded/damaged stickers look quite good as they are!
If you have a tool and aren't aware of what it can do, its dangerous. A jedi can do amazing things with a lightsaber. A roomful of chimps with lightsabers... would get messy.

Back at this. Busy year moving grandmother and nursing a back injury. I started a base for this model. After learning that Vader resides on Mustafar I thought I would attempt a lava base. I had a basswood plaque to mount it on. I started by cutting two layers of plastic the same size. After tracing the pieces of "lava" I cut them out and glued them to bottom piece.

I used Milliput to fill the cracks and sculpted the Milliput to simulate the lava. When the putty set up I sanded the top of the whole base and primed it with Tamiya Grey Primer.

In order to have a neutral pallet to paint the lava colors I airbrushed the lava seams white.

I used three colors for the lava.

Starting with the darkest color - Model Master Insignia Red - I painted the lava seams.

Using my Badger Sotar 20/20 I airbrushed Orange then in the very center of the seam Yellow. I watched a few Youtube tutorials that used this technique to simulate the varying colors created by cooling lava.

I'll add some progress photos soon. Thanks!

Using a combination of Tamiya tape and Mold Builders latex I masked the seams. I then painted the base flat black.

When dry I carefully removed the latex and touched up the edges by hand with a flat brush. I sealed it with flat lacquer and test fitted it on the wooden base. The wooden base was primed and then painted with Rust-Oleum Hammered black. The mounting rod is aluminum with square brass inside.

I investigated various methods of creating a "crackle" effect for the surface of the cooled lava "plates." "Kroma Crackle" was recommended by a helpful associate at Blick Art Materials. I taped the seams and the edges of the base. The instructions for Kroma Crackle recommend using a paint knife to spread the product evenly to a minimum thickness of 1 mm. It takes a few days to completely dry creating a very realistic "crackle" effect.

Since Kroma Crackle is an acrylic product it must be sealed before adding washes other weathering. I sealed the base with flat lacquer and airbrushed black then sealed again.

Awesome base!

I love the crackling effect

Here are the photos on the base after washes and some dry brushing. Once you apply Kroma Crackle the effect is completely random so it actually creates a very natural surface. I think it worked.
