3d printed Imperial Probe Droid

Postby NovaDenied » January 4th, 2018, 11:10 pm

I printed this model off Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2664366).I had a lot of creative ideas with this one and played around with it. I used rustoleum primer filler, Tamiya paints and Flory models dark dirt wash to finish this model. Printed at 100% scale and I modified the bottom thin body with tinkercad to make the lip between the top and bottom as I have seen in a bunch of photos of the droid. I used a magnet to attach the head for ease of removal. I lost some detail because of sanding the filler and replaced it with sheet plastic. I also added a few extra greebles and some leg pistons for fun, its not screen accurate but I still love it. The base is covered with Vallejo's snow ground texture with the rocks painted in acrylics. The red eyes were a bit trial and error, I used Testors chrome as an under coat and then Tamiya's clear smoke and clear red as the top coat. I got the effect I wanted but I need to work on my execution of it. The gloss black eyes were a bit of a pain too lol, nearly impossible for me to paint a perfect circle but overall I'm very happy with this model. It looks like it may be 1/12th scale at 100%, like the Bandai droid kits.

That really cool!

Great job. I like the contrast of the glossy vs matte finish
If you have a tool and aren't aware of what it can do, its dangerous. A jedi can do amazing things with a lightsaber. A roomful of chimps with lightsabers... would get messy.

Just out of curiosity, how much was this to print? Because in about a month, I have a 1/12 scale probe Droid coming as well Master by Nicholas.

That looks AMAZING! I love your paint choices and the base really sells it.
Great ice effect!

Thanks guys. As for the price of printing it, I have my own 3d printer so the price for me was several grams of filament, so maybe $2 OR $3. i get 2 5kg rolls of filament off ebay for $30 so it can be very cheap to print things. Even though I printed this for next to nothing I am still very interested in seeing what you guys have coming with the probe droid. I already have the JPG Gonk and Chopper droids. Gonna have a whole series of droids all lined up together one of these days.

If anyone wants to know, I used Tamiya's Xf-63 German grey and xf-56 Metallic grey, 2 to 1 mix to get the dark grey metallic finish and Flory's dark dirt wash darkened it up. The flat clear coat dulled down the metal finish a bit but no too much. The chipping was done with XF-16 flat aluminum. I used a 1/16 aluminum tube and a 032 music wire telescoping rods from K&S precision metals and some bits of plastic to make the shocks for the legs.

Is it me, or is that orange eye WAY too big for its body?
