1/72 TIE Whisper Interceptor

Post by Uwe Kaeding » July 20th, 2021, 2:46 am

At The same time I've been building the standard TIE Whisper, I've also been building the Interceptor version flown by Kylo Ren in Rise of Skywalker. This is also based on the Bandai First Order Special Forces TIE Fighter and the 3D printed conversion kit put out by Modelwerks. Started with the cockpit, where I removed the back seat and added some parts from the spares box and scrap pieces of styrene to cover the gaps:

Added a casting of the front panel, based on the one I modified for the standard TIE Whisper build:

Cockpit in place - with a Kylo Ren figure made by modifying a FO pilot body and adding a left-over Anakin Skywalker head (originally from either a Fine Molds Jedi Starfighter kit, or the Studio Starforge Jedi Interceptor kit, I can't remember which one):

Basic body put together - wing centre pieces just clipped in place for now and the standard cockpit glass still in place:

New windshield attached - again from a casting made during the standard TIE Whisper build:

And here is the cockpit with the hull extensions put in place:

Moving onto the wings - the ones from the conversion kit have a mixture of raised lines on the centre panels and inscribed lines on the outer panels. To make them a bit more uniform I added some sections of 0.4mm rod to give some variation to the outer wing panels:

I had painted the wing panels but wasn't happy with the gaps around the inserted ribs - so I had a go at puttying them a bit. Also I wasn't happy with the colour - too warm. I'll have to mix up a new colour later:

Dry fits of the wing outer and centre sections showed a gap for one section on each side. A shim was made from scrap styrene, glued in place and trimmed to match the opposite side:

Next job is to repaint the panels and mask before gluing the wings together.

A bit more work done. Wing panels glued together - some repositioning required as they are a long way from parallel:

Here the wing panels have been repositioned and the gaps filled:

Wing-tip guns glued in place and a coat of black primer on the wings:

And back to the ball - gaps under the extensions filled with Aves and a coat of interior grey on the transparencies - also used it as a primer to check the filled areas:
