1/12 CB-23 Conversion

Post by Uwe Kaeding » January 7th, 2020, 12:07 am

I bought the Bandai BB-8 & D-O kit for the D-O droid but I'd already built BB-8, so I'm converting it to CB-23, the other ball droid in the Star Wars Resistance cartoon. The body is the same as BB-8, just different colours, but the head is quite different and needs some major changes.

I started by removing the top section of the BB-8 head:

The indents in the head (for the original sensors) and panel lines were filled and sanded:

A new panel was built for the top of the head. Also aerials were modified from kit parts - the small one doesn't need any changes but the large one was cut down and had a piece of styrene rod glued to the end as a locating tab:

The visible section of the head interior was boxed in and some detail added using styrene rod and tube:

And a new sensor eye was added to top piece - modified from a spare R2-D2 eye that comes with the R4-I9 kit:

I'm currently working on the new front eye piece and new panel lines for the head.

Some more work done on this one - the main eye piece has been fitted to the head - made from a shaped piece of 3mm styrene with an indentation milled into it sized to fit a lense from a Bandai R2-D2 kit (a bit bigger than the lens from the BB-8 kit). This was then fit into a cut-out in the front of the head:

Then the top and bottom pieces were added to the head:

I've started the scribing process but there is still a way to go.

I thought CB-23 was a neat design in the Resistance cartoon. This is looking great!

Nice mod! You'll have to pic them together when you're done.

Thanks guys and, yes, I really like the design as well and the idea of a photo of CB-23 and BB-8 together is a great idea! I'll definitely do that when she-s finished.

Anyway - I've primed the head. It still needs some clean-up and more panel lines but its getting there.

Well I've finally finished all the new panel lines on the head and added the final detail parts:

And the first coat of paint is on. Lots of masking ahead.

Just a small update - masking done on the aluminium bits and started on the turquoise:

More masking needed now, and then the red.

That's great!

I have been watching Resistance and I was wondering if Bandai would get around to doing one. They love reusing stuff.

At least now I have something to follow in case they never get around to doing one
If you have a tool and aren't aware of what it can do, its dangerous. A jedi can do amazing things with a lightsaber. A roomful of chimps with lightsabers... would get messy.

Thanks guys. I ended up doing the conversion because 1) Bandai really haven't shown any interest in either the Clone Wars or Resistance cartoons (although I live in hope for CW Y-Wing or Headhunter) and 2) I had a spare BB-8, so why not.
